Do you regularly suffer from stomach cramps?

Are you experiencing bloating and diarrhea after eating?

Feeling extra gassy no matter what you eat and drink?

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome, or “IBS” as it is commonly referred to, is a common condition that affects the large intestine. It can also make you feel lethargic and nauseous and give you backache and other symptoms.

How is IBS Treated Traditionally?

Most likely, your doctor recommended antacids (like Tums, Pepto-Bismol) or proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) to deal with “overactive” stomach acid or some other medication to deal with the symptoms.

While some medicines may slightly ease symptoms in the short term, they can seriously harm you in the long term. This is because you’ll never explore why you have bloating and diarrhea in the first place!

It is emblematic of a conventionally-trained practitioner’s approach. They go downstream from an observed symptom towards a diagnosis that can then be addressed with symptomatic prescription medicine.

In an insurance-based practice, that’s the only thing that can be accomplished in a typical 7-minute visit!

We Get to the Root Cause of Your IBS Symptoms

The problem with this is that there are so many reasons why you could experience chronic digestive distress.

Unless you understand the root cause of what’s leading to the observed digestive symptoms, you don’t know how to fix it for good.

That’s why the conventional approach to chronic digestive disorders is frustrating for both practice members AND doctors:

Patients never get to truly resolve their digestive issues. Instead of just managing their symptoms, while primary care doctors feel ill-equipped to identify what’s causing the observed gut issues. At Functional Nutrition Resources in Tulsa, OK, we get to the root cause of your IBS.

Another type of IBS is IBS-C which is Irritable Bowel Syndrome along with constipation. The feeling of abdominal discomfort or bloating occurs along with constipation.

Common symptoms include bloating, gas, and changes in bowel movement. This can include straining, infrequent stools, and hard or lumpy stools. You may also feel like your bowel is not fully empty after going to the bathroom.

You may have to move around or press on your lower stomach in order to get your stools to move. Feelings of discomfort are often relieved after bowel movements. Your bowel movements will often be infrequent causing discomfort and interfering with your day-to-day life.

The Functional Medicine Approach to IBS

The functional medicine approach to healing the gut relies on advanced lab testing. We then create a custom-tailored, personalized protocol to restore your body’s innate healing potential so that we can bring your body back into balance.

Since the gut impacts our health on so many levels, it’s the first place we focus on when we explore a practice member’s case. We determine whether they have leaky gut, irritable bowel syndrome, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), or its cousin, small intestinal fungal overgrowth (SIFO).
