stress and your immune system

What Stress Does To Your Immune System

Stress is a normal part of modern daily life, but most people are not aware of the negative consequences of stress and their immune system—until it is too late.

Some people can cope with stress better than others, while others take practical steps to reduce their stress each day to diminish its wear and tear on their bodies and minds. As functional medicine practitioners in Tulsa, OK, stress is a leading factor in many of our clients’ health issues.

However, most of us are not aware of how much stress is harming our health until we are diagnosed with a serious illness like heart disease, and then we’re told we need to make drastic changes to our lifestyle if we want to live longer.

So, what exactly is stress?

Stress is the body and mind’s response to any unusual event or situation that challenges us and makes us feel under pressure.

Stress provides the body with a burst of energy in the form of adrenaline, the “fight or flight” response that is part of human nature.

So people either run away from the thing that stresses them, or they turn and try to deal with it in various ways, some of which will be more successful than others.

Our life is stressful from the moment we are born. There is the stress of birth, of feeling hunger and needing our diaper changed.

School and university stress

At school, there is the stress of performing well during exams, in presentations in front of the class, the school play, or on the school sports team.

In our university years, there may be stresses related to maintaining a good enough GPA to stay in school, getting a scholarship or acceptance to grad school.

Then there are social stresses such as dating, relationships, friendships and peer pressure.

As adults outside of school, there is the stress of whether or not we will find a job. If we don’t, there is the stress of trying to make ends meet.

Even if we do manage to get a job, there is the stress of trying to keep it.  Additionally, trying to get a raise, a promotion, and advance in our careers can cause added stress. Even happy occasions in life such as a new job, wedding, baby or home can trigger stress in the body.

Most of us work very hard and “burn the candle at both ends” to try to keep up with all the demands on our time every day. This can lead to a lack of sleep and “downtime” or relaxation to help recharge the body and mind. The lack of rest and downtime can, in turn, lead to a weakened immune system.

Lack of sleep

A lack of sleep has been shown to have the same effects on the immune system as stress. Stress can also interfere with one’s ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. This can then create a vicious cycle of even more stress from sleep deprivation, which can leave your immune system vulnerable and open to attack.

If you’ve been acting like a workaholic, not getting enough sleep, and not taking time out for relaxation, it’s time to get your stress under control.

Damaging your immune system

Above all, you need to avoid burning out and damaging your immune system so much that it triggers excessive inflammation. Inflammation has been implicated in many medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and certain forms of cancer.

There are many ways to reduce stress effectively.  Yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, a warm, relaxing bath, a good night’s sleep, and spending quality time with friends and family are all great options! As functional medicine practitioners in Tulsa, OK, We can give you more personalized information about what can help your stress levels.

If you have been overworking, it’s time to make some new appointments on your calendar with yourself in order to reduce stress, add adequate sleep to your daily routine, and care better for yourself as you boost your immune system.

FNR has been a life saver and helped me get my life back. I had suffered from Infertility, IBS, endometriosis for around 10 years it was so bad that I had constant stomach aches bloating etc my symptoms seemed to be progressing. Eventually I started having Thyroid issues felt sluggish, fatigued, brain fog so bad it was sometimes hard to put a sentence together the bad days were far out numbering the days I felt decent it got the point I couldn’t go grocery shopping alone. In early 2022 ended up having the right side of my thyroid removed due to nodules and they also found a micro-carcinoma. I thought once the right side was removed my symptoms would go away I was wrong. My primary physician kept telling me all my labs looked good I kept saying no there is something wrong with me after several attempts of trying and asking and no resolution from my primary I looked elsewhere and found FNR. I started the program in August 2023 and FNR has been a God send they completed the proper testing and found the root cause of my health issues was a leaky gut that had went so long without correction that it had turned into the autoimmune Hashimoto’s. Since beginning the program almost 5 months ago I feel like I have my life back I have energy to live a vital life and these ladies were here every step of the way to help motivate, help with cooking tips for my new lifestyle you name it they are there to help. I am so grateful to you all!

These ladies gave me my life back. I saw a nutritionist before I came here and they did not help me at all. After that first program I was discouraged and felt like I wasted time and money. But then I found FNR and they were wonderful! Not only did they help me through their pro they cared about me each step of the way. I feel better now than I ever have in my life and am able to get off all my medications. I never thought any of this was possible. Highly highly highly recommend!

Working with the ladies at FNR has been the biggest blessing! They truly care about you and your progress on your healing journey and you never feel as though your just another number with them. It was such a relief to find an office that knows what to look for in lab work and know how to treat the problem at the source. The knowledge they provide you with lasts a lifetime of healthy living. When I went for my initial consultation with Heather, I felt like a complete wreck of emotions because I truly felt at my lowest I could have been. Since being in the program for 3 months, I feel like I'm getting my life back. I have so many people telling me that I'm looking so much better and having a personality again. Invest in your health, you will never regret it!

I would recommend Functional Nutritional Resources to anyone who wants to take charge of and improve their health and feel better. This organization is a wealth of information, the program is set up in an extremely well thought out and organized manner. All the people that work there are professional, personable, and very helpful. It has permanently changed my life and my health. It has taken the guess work out of how to proceed in the future to assure my health will be at its optimum. I have been weaning off a medication that I was taking since 2016 and am taking a holistic approach to my health now, which is exactly what my objective was going into this program. Thank you FNR for all your help. Keep up your good work, your are changing lives.

I am so thankful to have found Functional Nutrition Resources! I've had rheumatoid arthritis for 40 plus years with not much hope...until now. After a few weeks in the program I'm basically pain free, the sugar cravings are gone, and I'm sleeping better. I feel like I have my life back!
