Why Do I Keep Getting Colds?

Millions of people get colds each and every year. A cold isn’t necessarily a serious health issue, but it can be frustrating – especially when you constantly feel run down, or you have to miss out on the activities you enjoy.

Furthermore, multiple colds can indicate deeper issues with your immune system. So, if you’re asking, “Why do I keep getting colds?” it’s a good question. Functional Nutrition Resources is here to help. To better understand why people get colds and how to address the underlying causes, it’s important to delve into the intricacies of the immune system’s functions and the role of functional nutrition.

The Average Number of Colds per Year

First, let’s discuss the average number of colds an American adult gets each year. When you ask, “Why do I keep getting colds?” you may or may not be experiencing more sickness than the average person does.

On average, adults experience two to three colds annually, while children may experience even more due to their developing immune systems and “less hygienic” social circles. The best way to track your colds is to mark them down on a calendar. If you have more than four colds a year, you may want to look into ways to boost your immune system.

Common Types of Colds

A cold is caused by a family of viruses known as rhinoviruses, which are highly contagious and easily spread through direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces.

There are numerous types of cold viruses, but rhinoviruses are the most common culprits. They can lead to symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, coughing, a sore throat, and mild fatigue. In most cases, symptoms resolve within a week or two without the need for medical intervention.

The Limitations of Decongestants and Pain Relievers

However, simply getting over a cold quickly will not do anything to improve your immune system beyond the natural immunity that comes from producing cold-fighting antibodies. Decongestants and pain relievers provide temporary relief from cold symptoms, but they do not address the root cause of the issue: a weakened immune system or a contaminated environment.

While these medications can alleviate discomfort, they don’t prevent future infections. So they have nothing to do with why you keep getting colds or how to stop them. To truly reduce the frequency of colds, it’s essential to focus on bolstering the body’s defense mechanisms.

Enhancing Immune Function through Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is often described as root-cause medicine. At functional medicine practices such as Functional Nutrition Resources, practitioners find out why your immune system isn’t performing its best. We want to find the answer to why you keep getting colds.

Part of this approach involves personalized wellness programs. You work with a practitioner to develop a holistic strategy for boosting immune function. There’s no secret pill for keeping you from getting colds. Instead, improving health across all areas is key. Here are some examples of holistic approaches that can keep you from getting sick throughout the year.

Nutrition

A well-balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants is crucial for immune system health. Nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and selenium play pivotal roles in supporting immune function.

Gut Health

A significant portion of the immune system resides in the gut. Consuming prebiotic and probiotic-rich foods fosters a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn strengthens the immune response.

Stress Management

Chronic stress can weaken the immune system. If you keep getting colds without knowing why, then incorporating stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga can help regulate your body’s stress response.

Exercise

Regular physical activity boosts circulation and promotes the movement of immune cells throughout the body. Engaging in moderate exercise has been linked to a lower incidence of colds.

Lower Toxicity

Finally, minimizing exposure to environmental toxins such as pollutants and chemicals can help prevent immune system overload and dysfunction.

Empower Yourself with Functional Nutrition Resources

To summarize, getting the common cold multiple times in a year might be a sign of a weakened immune system. While it may be impossible to completely eliminate the risk of getting a cold, focusing on enhancing immune function through functional nutrition can significantly reduce its frequency.

By adopting a holistic approach that encompasses nutrition, gut health, stress management, exercise, and toxin reduction, individuals can empower themselves to take charge of their immune health and enjoy a life of greater vitality and well-being. With the right health strategy in place, your friends and family members may soon be asking why you don’t keep getting colds!

FNR has been a life saver and helped me get my life back. I had suffered from Infertility, IBS, endometriosis for around 10 years it was so bad that I had constant stomach aches bloating etc my symptoms seemed to be progressing. Eventually I started having Thyroid issues felt sluggish, fatigued, brain fog so bad it was sometimes hard to put a sentence together the bad days were far out numbering the days I felt decent it got the point I couldn’t go grocery shopping alone. In early 2022 ended up having the right side of my thyroid removed due to nodules and they also found a micro-carcinoma. I thought once the right side was removed my symptoms would go away I was wrong. My primary physician kept telling me all my labs looked good I kept saying no there is something wrong with me after several attempts of trying and asking and no resolution from my primary I looked elsewhere and found FNR. I started the program in August 2023 and FNR has been a God send they completed the proper testing and found the root cause of my health issues was a leaky gut that had went so long without correction that it had turned into the autoimmune Hashimoto’s. Since beginning the program almost 5 months ago I feel like I have my life back I have energy to live a vital life and these ladies were here every step of the way to help motivate, help with cooking tips for my new lifestyle you name it they are there to help. I am so grateful to you all!

These ladies gave me my life back. I saw a nutritionist before I came here and they did not help me at all. After that first program I was discouraged and felt like I wasted time and money. But then I found FNR and they were wonderful! Not only did they help me through their pro they cared about me each step of the way. I feel better now than I ever have in my life and am able to get off all my medications. I never thought any of this was possible. Highly highly highly recommend!

Working with the ladies at FNR has been the biggest blessing! They truly care about you and your progress on your healing journey and you never feel as though your just another number with them. It was such a relief to find an office that knows what to look for in lab work and know how to treat the problem at the source. The knowledge they provide you with lasts a lifetime of healthy living. When I went for my initial consultation with Heather, I felt like a complete wreck of emotions because I truly felt at my lowest I could have been. Since being in the program for 3 months, I feel like I'm getting my life back. I have so many people telling me that I'm looking so much better and having a personality again. Invest in your health, you will never regret it!
